MILITARY/ AEROSPACE EMBEDDED COMPUTERS: Overview
Embedded Computers are used in special-purpose systems in which the computer is dedicated to the device or system it controls. Unlike general-purpose computers, e.g. personal computers, embedded computers perform pre-defined task(s), usually with very specific requirements, run with limited hardware resources: small or no keyboard, screen, and little memory. Software for embedded computers is often called firmware, and is stored in read-only memory or Flash memory chips rather than a disk drive. Virtually all appliances that have a digital interface -- watches, microwaves, VCRs, MP3 players, cars -- utilize embedded computers. Large stationary installations like traffic lights, factory controllers, or the systems controlling nuclear power plants also use embedded computers.
